GRE Exam Structure: Sections, Timing, Questions, Scores and Preparation Plan

The GRE General Test is shorter than before, but it still requires strong reasoning, reading, writing, quantitative thinking and time management. This guide explains the current GRE exam structure, section-wise timing, question distribution, score range and how Nepal students should prepare smartly for graduate admission abroad.

1:58 Total Test Time
54 Verbal + Quant Questions
1 Analytical Writing Task
5 Years Score Validity
Current GRE Format

What is the Current GRE Exam Structure?

The current GRE General Test has three main measures: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. Analytical Writing always comes first. After that, Verbal and Quant sections appear in the test flow. The total test time is about 1 hour and 58 minutes.

For Nepal students, the shorter GRE means less total testing time, but it also means every question carries more importance. You need strong accuracy, pacing and section-wise strategy from the beginning of preparation.

GRE has three scored measures

GRE does not give only one total score. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are reported separately, and Analytical Writing is also reported separately. Universities may focus on different sections depending on the program.

Analytical Writing Verbal Reasoning Quantitative Reasoning

Why structure matters

Understanding the GRE structure helps you plan preparation correctly. Engineering, science, data and economics students usually need strong Quant scores, while humanities, policy and communication-focused programs may pay more attention to Verbal and Writing.

Before booking the GRE, check your target university requirement and take mock tests to know whether your section-wise score is close to the expected range.
Section-Wise Breakdown

GRE Sections, Questions and Timing

The table below shows the current GRE General Test structure. Students should prepare section-wise because each section has its own question type, timing pressure and strategy.

Order / Measure Questions or Task Time What You Need to Do
Analytical Writing 1 Analyze an Issue task 30 minutes Write a clear, logical and well-structured essay with examples and academic expression.
Verbal Reasoning Section 1 12 questions 18 minutes Solve reading, text completion and sentence equivalence questions with accuracy and speed.
Verbal Reasoning Section 2 15 questions 23 minutes Handle more reading and vocabulary-based reasoning with stronger elimination strategy.
Quantitative Reasoning Section 1 12 questions 21 minutes Solve arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis and quantitative comparison questions.
Quantitative Reasoning Section 2 15 questions 26 minutes Apply stronger problem solving, pacing and accuracy under time pressure.
Total 54 Verbal + Quant questions and 1 writing task 1 hour 58 minutes Show graduate-level readiness through writing, reasoning, reading and quantitative skills.
Scoring

GRE Score Structure: Verbal, Quant and Analytical Writing

GRE score reporting is section-wise. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are scored from 130 to 170 each. Analytical Writing is scored from 0 to 6. Students should not ignore Analytical Writing because it can reflect academic communication ability, especially for graduate programs.

V

Verbal Reasoning

Score range is 130–170. It measures reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, sentence logic, inference, text completion and sentence equivalence.

Q

Quantitative Reasoning

Score range is 130–170. It measures arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis, quantitative comparison and logical mathematical problem solving.

W

Analytical Writing

Score range is 0–6. It measures your ability to develop a clear position, organize ideas, support reasoning and write in academic English.

Question Types

GRE Question Types by Section

Each GRE section has different question styles. A good preparation plan should train both content knowledge and question-type strategy.

AW

Analytical Writing

You get one Issue task. You must present your position clearly, support it with relevant reasons and examples, and organize the essay logically within 30 minutes.

RC

Reading Comprehension

You read short or long passages and answer questions about main idea, detail, inference, function, structure and author’s purpose.

TC

Text Completion

You complete sentences or passages by choosing words that fit both meaning and logic. Vocabulary and sentence structure are important.

SE

Sentence Equivalence

You select two answer choices that produce similar meaning. It tests vocabulary, tone, contrast and sentence logic.

QC

Quantitative Comparison

You compare two quantities and decide which is greater, whether they are equal, or whether the relationship cannot be determined.

PS

Problem Solving and Data

You solve standard math problems, word problems, multiple-answer questions and data interpretation based on tables, graphs or charts.

Strategy

How to Prepare for Each GRE Section

GRE preparation should not be random. You need a separate plan for Writing, Verbal and Quant, followed by timed mixed practice and full mock tests.

Start with a diagnostic test

A diagnostic test shows your current Verbal, Quant and Writing level. It helps you decide how much time you need and which section requires more attention.

Build GRE Quant fundamentals

Focus on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis, word problems, quantitative comparison and accuracy under time pressure.

Prepare Verbal with logic, not only vocabulary

Learn vocabulary in context, sentence structure, contrast words, passage mapping, inference and answer elimination strategy.

Practice Analytical Writing weekly

Write timed essays, learn structure, use clear examples and review logic, grammar and organization.

Use section-wise timing

Practice each section in official-style timing so that your speed and accuracy improve together.

Take full mock tests before booking

Book the official GRE only when your mock scores are close to your target score and you still have time for score reporting or retake.

Section Priority

Which GRE Section is Most Important for Your Program?

Different graduate programs may value different GRE sections. Nepal students should check the program page carefully and prepare according to the target department’s expectation.

Program Type Usually Important Section Preparation Focus
Engineering / Computer Science / Data Science Quantitative Reasoning High Quant accuracy, algebra, data interpretation, word problems and time control.
Economics / Finance / Analytics Quantitative Reasoning + Verbal Reasoning Quant strength with strong reading and analytical reasoning ability.
Public Policy / Education / Social Science Verbal Reasoning + Analytical Writing Reading comprehension, argument logic, vocabulary, writing clarity and reasoning.
Business / Management Programs Quant + Verbal balance Balanced preparation with strong problem solving and reading-based decision making.
Research-Based Graduate Programs Depends on department Check program requirement and professor/department expectations before final target score planning.
A good GRE score target should be based on your program, university ranking, scholarship plan, GPA and overall profile, not only on a random internet number.

Common Mistakes

Common GRE Structure Mistakes Students Make

Many students know the section names but still prepare incorrectly. Avoid these common mistakes before your GRE test date.

1

Ignoring Analytical Writing

Some students focus only on Quant and Verbal. Writing is separately reported and can matter for academic programs.

2

Only Memorizing Vocabulary

GRE Verbal needs sentence logic, context, reading strategy and elimination. Vocabulary alone is not enough.

3

Practicing Quant Without Timing

Many students solve correctly but slowly. GRE Quant needs both accuracy and section-wise speed.

4

No Mistake Analysis

Taking many tests without reviewing mistakes will not improve score. Review is where real improvement starts.

5

Booking Too Early

Booking before mock readiness can create pressure and reduce performance. Book when your score is stable.

6

Using Old GRE Structure

The GRE changed to a shorter format. Prepare according to the current structure, not outdated materials.
